NFL Picks, Week 17: New-Look Cowboys

Tony RomoThe Dallas Cowboys shut everyone up in the simplest of ways: by winning.

It's really our fault. We all look at "trends'' and say "the Cowboys can't win in December.'' Then when they start December with two straight losses, we say "I told you so.''

Except they then ended New Orleans' unbeaten run and followed that up by smothering Washington and, all of a sudden, they're in the playoffs and going for the NFC East championship head-to-head at home against Philadelphia. And now they can win in December and may on into January. And February?

It's the Dallas defense that's doing it -- holding the Saints to 17 and shutting out the Redskins. They're favored by three against the Eagles (home-field) who can score points but also allow them.

Incentive? Philadelphia gets a first-round bye with a win.

Buddy NixORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Buffalo Bills national scout Buddy Nix has been promoted to general manager in team owner Ralph Wilson's first move to revamp his front office.

Nix was introduced at a news conference Thursday as the Bills (5-10) prepare to close their season hosting Indianapolis (14-1) on Sunday. Nix fills a void after Marv Levy stepped down as general manager following the 2007 season.

Chief operating officer Russ Brandon, who had been filling the GM's role, was promoted to chief executive officer, reporting to Wilson.

The Minnesota Vikings don't expect cornerback Antoine Winfield to be at full strength until the offseason. Will Isaac Bruce Cap Career With Appearance in St. Louis?

Isaac BruceNiners wide receiver Isaac Bruce seems to be ending his NFL career much the way he played it. Quietly, and without much self-promotion.

The last remaining Los Angeles Rams player still active -- Bruce was a second-round draft pick there in 1994 -- is preparing for what figures to be his last hurrah.

Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome, where Bruce was a standout until he left for San Francisco after the 2007 season, figures to be his last, capping a prolific career in which he compiled 15,208 receiving yards - second-most in league history -- and 1,024 catches, which ranks fifth among NFL receivers.

Now the dean of a young, developing 49ers receiving corps that features first-round draft pick Michael Crabtree, Bruce, 37, was supplanted from the starting lineup in mid-season by Josh Morgan. This week, Morgan and other 49ers receivers approached coach Mike Singletary and Morgan offered to return his starting spot to Bruce, a four-time Pro Bowler and one of the signature players in the Rams' "Greatest Show on Turf" Super Bowl era.

The NFL has fined Denver Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley $25,000 for making contact with an official that led to his ejection from last weekend's game at Philadelphia. Stokley said he plans to appeal the fine. The 11-year veteran was upset over the lack of an interference call on a third-down play in the first quarter against the Eagles when his route was disrupted by a defender.
